Milena Muzquiz’s sculptures are predicated on the poetics of living things, without references to artists or art movements. Starting out from conventional crafts and ceramics, Muzquiz produces defiantly contemporary objects. Her interest is rooted in the idea of how everyday objects like vases and pottery can be represented as theatrical narratives with a symbolic intent.
This exhibition will be autobiographical; tracing the artist’s experiences of crossing the Mexican-American border repeatedly throughout her life. Originally from Tijuana, Muzquiz has tapped into her living memories of “Sitting in a car filled with sand (beige) and sound (blue) on top of asphalt (dark gray).”
The show will be constructed like a series of villages that interact with one another and contradict each other. The works will eponymously refer to sites on Muzquiz’s pilgrimages through California to the border, and are also locations that signify autobiographical moments through her life.
Milena Muzquiz has exhibited around the world, including solo exhibitions in Florence, New York, Los Angeles Madrid, and participated in biennials including the Whitney Biennial, the 6th Liverpool Biennial and the 28th Bienal de Sao Paulo .
David Gill Gallery is hosting Muzquiz’s first London solo exhibition between 1st and 30th March 2019.
