Pancake Day is a time for creative cooking - whether fluffy American-style pancakes or classic thin crepes take your fancy. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday was a feast day to use up eggs, fats and larder items ahead of the 40 days of Lent, and today has evolved into a culinary celebration of the pancake and the wide array of toppings to explore.
What’s your go-to pancake style? It’s time to step away from the lemon and sugar and take inspiration from some of central London’s best restaurants’ pancake dishes…
Fresh berries & syrup
You can’t go wrong with this topping on a pancake. Fresh fruits such as strawberries and bananas have our vote, as there is much to be said for a delightfully simple pancake. Restaurants Locket’s & Franco’s agree - they serve this breakfast staple with a generous dash of maple syrup. Madera at The Treehouse Hotel takes their offering one step further, by whipping up some waffles.
Buttermilk & Blueberries
Buttermilk blueberry pancakes are lighter and brighter, with the zing of blueberry flavour bursting with every bite. Brunch favourites Heddon Street Kitchen, Ziggy Green and Maison Francois serve excellent varieties, with the latter adding lemon crème fraiche and pistachios for an extra zing.
Looking to kick things up a notch? Draw inspiration from Duck & Waffle Local’s Lemon Meringue Waffle – complete with Lemon Curd, Lemon Meringue and even a scoop of Lemon Sherbet Ice Cream on the side.
A savoury pancake is not to be sniffed at. We prefer to serve a chunky American pancake with streaky bacon – but there is also the highly regarded combo of ham and cheese if you’re more of a crepe coveter. The Wolseley also adds bacon to French Toast, if you’re looking to indulge in a pancake day feast.
Whilst restaurant doors are closed for dining in, we hope this edit serves as inspiration for your delicious creations at home. Please share your Pancake Day bakes with us on social and tag @StJamesLondon & @RegentStreetW1.
