From internationally renowned art galleries to expert dealers, our neighbourhood is full of places to get your culture fix. Add these winter exhibitions in St James’s and Regent Street to your must-visit list.

Royal Academy of Arts

Head to the Royal Academy of Arts for not one, but two blockbuster exhibitions this autumn and winter. Performance artist Marina Abramović is put in the spotlight with works spanning a range of mediums, including a re-staging of celebrated piece The Artist is Present, from 23 September – 1 January. Another show sure to make an impression is Impressionists on Paper: Degas to Toulouse Lautrec, which brings together lesser-known works on paper by key figures of the movement, running from 25 November – 10 March.

White Cube Mason’s Yard

Explore a solo exhibition from Christine Ay Tjoe, whose expressive works delve into connecting emotions and fears experienced by humans. Inspired by themes of philosophy and spirituality – including that of the Dalai Lama – the Indonesian-based artist’s abstract works are layered, at times suggesting figurative forms and hidden elements. See the show at White Cube Mason’s Yard from 17 November – 13 January.

Institute of Contemporary Arts

Inspired by a 1970s sci-fi essay of the same name, Gray Wielebinski taps into apocalyptic anxieties in The Red Sun is High, the Blue Low, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts from 20 September – 23 December. Delve into the interplay between public and private realms through eclectic references, whether science fiction, the Cold War or games.

Centre for British Photography

Enjoy a glimpse into the everyday lives of market traders through the lens of Dorothy Bohm, whose London Street Markets captures from the 1960s and beyond are put on show at the Centre for British Photography. Travel across the capital, from the old Covent Garden market to Billingsgate, with the pioneering photographer’s works. Open from 5 October – 17 December.

Cristea Roberts Gallery

Discover two striking series of works by Georg Baselitz at Cristea Roberts Gallery this winter. See large-scale lino-cut works that have been brought together for the first time since their creation more than 20 years ago with Belle Haleine. Also discover striking works related to the artist’s recurring theme of deer, alongside portraits of artist friends, in Prints 2017-2021. Both displays run from 10 November – 23 December.

Mall Galleries

Uncover some of the best artistic talent of today at the prestigious Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition 2023. Browse more than 250 works from established and emerging artists, at the Mall Galleries from 29 November – 16 December – what’s more, they’re for sale, so you could even bring your favourite home!

Portland Gallery

Be transported to the Inner Hebrides with more than 40 new works from Frances Macdonald at the Portland Gallery, from 7 – 22 December. Characterised by their use of colour, the artist’s works depict beautiful and, at times, surprising landscapes – particularly of the island of Iona.
